Depression related suicides have become more common in recent times, with more youths resorting to ending their lives in an effort to escape from the claws of depression. An issue that was once believed to affect people from developed communities, poorer societies in Africa and Cameroon in particular are witnessing the sad phenomenon of depression. What hope then, for suicide prevention?
In Cameroon, one cannot go a full month without seeing some disturbing news on the media, regarding young people who have committed suicide. According to the World Health Organization, every 40 seconds, someone loses their life to suicide. This is a call for concern, not only at the global level, but also at our immediate environment.
LouChat has extensively presented reasons for depression especially in Cameroon youths, and these reasons lead people into committing suicide. However, much needs to be done to promote suicide prevention. No help is too small, no problem is too big. As we move towards the World Mental Health Day 2019 which falls on October 10th, may we learn more on depression and accept help.
LouChat will be launching a suicide prevention campaign to join the movement and help people understand, manage and prevent depression.
